International school cost comparison 2026: what families actually pay across UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada, and Singapore

Dilek Yılmaz, Co-founder & Director 29 Nisan 2026 13 dk okuma

Tuition is the headline number. The total cost — boarding, travel, ancillaries, insurance, summer programs — is often 15-25% higher than the published number. Here's the honest accounting across the five major boarding markets.

When parents ask us 'how much does international boarding actually cost?' the honest answer is 'meaningfully more than the school's tuition page says.' Schools publish tuition as a single number. Families plan against that number. Then the first October bill arrives with technology fees, school trips, exam registration, optional extracurriculars, weekend activity charges, and uniform replacements — and the budget conversation starts again.

We've spent a decade tracking real all-in numbers across the five major boarding markets — UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada, and Singapore — based on what families we've placed have actually spent in their first complete academic year. This guide shares those numbers honestly so you can plan against reality, not against marketing. We'll walk through each market with the published tuition + the categories that get added on top.

**A note on currency.** All numbers are in USD for cross-market comparison, converted at January 2026 rates: 1 GBP ≈ 1.27 USD, 1 CHF ≈ 1.10 USD, 1 EUR ≈ 1.08 USD, 1 SGD ≈ 0.74 USD. Exchange rate volatility can swing your annual cost ±10% — budget with a 5-8% currency cushion if your home currency is TRY, EUR, or other non-USD.

**The categories of cost beyond tuition.**

Across every market, the same categories show up. Tuition + boarding (the published number). School-organized activities + sports (sometimes included, often not — confirm school-by-school). Technology fees (laptops, subscriptions, school IT charges) — typically USD 500-1,500/year. Books, materials, uniforms — USD 1,500-3,000/year. Exam fees (especially IB / IGCSE / A-Level / AP — the external exam boards charge USD 200-300 per exam taken). Optional summer programs / expedition fees. Travel home (the biggest variable cost — depends on flights, frequency, distance). Insurance — health, dental, evacuation; some schools include, some don't. Visa fees + permits. Weekly personal spending money. Holiday transit (when boarding houses close for term breaks).

**United Kingdom: published USD 60-80k → all-in USD 78-100k**

Tier 1 UK boarding (Eton, Harrow, Westminster, Winchester, Charterhouse, Wellington): published 2026-27 tuition + boarding USD 75-85k. Add USD 6-10k for school trips, exam fees, books, uniforms. Add USD 5-8k for travel home (4 round trips Istanbul-London + half-term shorter trips). Add USD 2-4k for personal spending. Add USD 2-3k for insurance + visa renewals. **All-in: USD 90-110k for top boarding.** Tier 2 UK boarding (Wellington, Repton, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Marlborough): roughly USD 78-92k all-in. Tier 3 (Bromsgrove, Mill Hill International, Leighton Park): USD 60-75k all-in.

**Switzerland: published USD 100-150k → all-in USD 130-200k**

Top Swiss boarding (Le Rosey, Aiglon, Beau Soleil, Brillantmont): published CHF 100-160k (USD 110-176k). Add CHF 5-10k for ski program where not included. Add CHF 6-12k for travel home (Istanbul-Geneva 4 round trips). Add CHF 4-7k for technology, books, uniforms, personal spending. Add CHF 8-15k one-time for entrance bond + matriculation at some schools. Add CHF 3-5k for excursions and weekend trips into Geneva/Zurich. **All-in for Lake Geneva tier: CHF 130-200k (USD 145-220k).** TASIS-tier and smaller schools: CHF 100-150k all-in (USD 110-165k).

**United States: published USD 65-85k → all-in USD 80-105k**

Top US prep boarding (Andover, Exeter, Choate, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville): published USD 65-78k. Add USD 8-12k for travel home (4 round trips Istanbul-Boston/NYC). Add USD 2-4k for books, technology, uniforms. Add USD 3-5k for personal spending + activities. Add USD 2-3k for visa, insurance. **All-in: USD 80-105k.** Need-based aid is genuinely available at Andover and Exeter (need-blind for international students with proven need) — talk to advisor about realistic aid possibilities for your family profile.

**Canada: published USD 50-65k → all-in USD 60-80k**

Top Canadian boarding (Upper Canada College, Branksome Hall, Ridley, Trinity College School, Appleby): published CAD 65-85k (USD 48-63k). Add CAD 8-12k for travel home (Istanbul-Toronto direct, 4 round trips). Add CAD 3-5k for books, ski, uniforms. Add CAD 3-5k for personal spending. **All-in: CAD 80-105k (USD 60-80k).** Canada's quiet cost advantage: typically 25-35% below US or UK boarding for academically equivalent outcomes, with an immigration pathway that the other two markets don't offer.

**Singapore: published USD 26-48k → all-in USD 35-60k (day school) or USD 50-75k (boarding)**

Day school (UWCSEA, Tanglin Trust, Singapore American, Stamford American): published SGD 35-65k (USD 26-48k). Add SGD 5-10k for application fees, books, lunch, uniforms, activities. Add SGD 4-8k for travel home. **All-in day school: USD 35-55k.** Boarding (where available — UWCSEA Dover, Tanglin Trust): add SGD 30-40k for boarding. **All-in boarding: USD 50-75k.** Singapore's cost advantage is real for day school + relocating-family scenarios; for full boarding, capacity is limited and pricing converges with mid-tier UK.

**The mistakes families make in budgeting.**

First: budgeting against tuition alone. Always plan with a 25% cushion above published tuition for the first year (you'll learn what's actually needed in year 2). Second: not building in currency cushion. If you're paying in USD or EUR and your home currency is TRY, plan for ±10% annual swing in real cost. Third: forgetting holiday housing. UK and Swiss boarding houses close for Christmas, Easter, and summer (3-4 weeks each). For students who can't fly home every break, you need either a local guardian arrangement (USD 200-400/week) or hotel + meals (USD 1,500-3,000/break). Fourth: underestimating extracurricular ambition. A child who joins the school ski team, adds private music lessons, plays competitive tennis, and attends a 4-week summer programme can easily add USD 8-12k/year in optional charges. Fifth: not budgeting for unexpected needs — orthodontics, glasses replacements, lost passports, weather-cancelled flights with rebooking fees.

**Need-based aid and scholarships across the markets.**

UK: ~5-15% of top boarding schools have meaningful international scholarships (academic, music, sport, all-rounder). Awards typically 10-50% of fees. Apply 12-18 months out — scholarship application timelines run earlier than standard admission. USA: Andover and Exeter are need-blind for international students with demonstrated need (genuinely; we've placed students). Other top US prep schools have small need-based aid. Switzerland: scholarships are rare and competitive; Aiglon Foundation and Le Rosey have small awards. Singapore: limited scholarship infrastructure for international students. Canada: similar to US — need-based aid at top schools possible but uncommon for international applicants.

**The cost of NOT going to boarding.**

The hidden comparison families don't make: what would the same education cost at home? In Türkiye, top international schools (TEV İnanç Türkeş, Robert Lisesi, ACI, BISI) cost USD 18-30k/year for day school. Total for high school years: USD 70-120k. The 'extra cost' of full international boarding is often USD 200-300k over five years vs USD 90-150k at a top Turkish international school. The right question isn't 'can we afford boarding?' — it's 'what do we get for the additional USD 50-150k that we wouldn't get at home?' For most families we work with, the answer is: deeper academic immersion, stronger university feeder pipeline, language fluency that travels, and an international peer network that compounds for life. Whether that's worth the cost is a family decision; we help families think about it honestly.

**Sample family budgets.**

Family A: Single child, age 13, target Eton. Budget: GBP 70,000 tuition + GBP 8,000 ancillaries + GBP 5,000 travel = GBP 83,000 (~USD 105,000) per year. Five years = ~USD 525,000. Family B: Single child, age 14, target Aiglon. CHF 130,000 tuition + CHF 15,000 ski + travel + ancillaries = CHF 145,000 (~USD 160,000)/year. Four years = ~USD 640,000. Family C: Single child, age 13, target Lawrenceville. USD 70,000 tuition + USD 12,000 travel + USD 8,000 ancillaries = USD 90,000/year. Five years = USD 450,000. Family D: Single child, age 12, target Branksome Hall (Toronto). CAD 75,000 tuition + CAD 12,000 ancillaries + travel = CAD 95,000 (~USD 70,000)/year. Six years = USD 420,000. Family E: Two children, day school in Singapore (relocating parent). USD 80,000/year for both children + USD 3-5k activities each = USD 90,000/year for schooling alone. Six years = USD 540,000.

**The honest takeaway.**

International boarding is a six-figure annual decision and a seven-figure five-year commitment. We don't recommend pretending otherwise. What we do recommend: plan with the all-in number from the start, build in a 5-10% cushion, ask schools for a written breakdown of what's included vs charged separately, and have an honest family conversation about whether the marginal cost above your home-country alternative is worth the marginal value. For the right family, it is. For others, a top Turkish international school + summer programs abroad + university overseas is a better total package.
