About Worksop College

Worksop College was founded in 1890 by the Woodard Corporation — the Anglican school federation founded by the Reverend Nathaniel Woodard — as a boys' boarding school in the Nottinghamshire town of Worksop. The school sits today on a 240-acre rural campus and is a Woodard Foundation school. The school became co-educational in 1981 and today educates around 751 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The Headmaster is Dr John Price.

The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association. The school's most internationally significant alumnus is Sir John Tavener — the English composer whose The Lamb (1982, setting of William Blake's poem), The Protecting Veil (1989, for cello and strings) and Song for Athene (sung at the funeral of Princess Diana in Westminster Abbey in 1997) made him among the most internationally performed contemporary British composers. Tavener converted to Russian Orthodoxy in 1977 and his subsequent work was substantially shaped by Orthodox liturgical music. He attended Worksop in the 1950s.

The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Woodard Foundation, intended to maintain Nathaniel Woodard's founding principle of providing Anglican boarding-school education to families regardless of means.
