British (A-Levels) okulları

Three is standard; four is ambitious. Most top universities (Oxbridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL) admit on three A-Levels — they want depth, not headcount. Four A-Levels makes sense for students aiming at competitive courses where multiple subjects are relevant (Engineering wants Maths + Further Maths + Physics + a fourth; Medicine wants Chemistry + Biology + a third + sometimes a fourth). Adding a fourth A-Level for the sake of breadth dilutes effort — and dilution shows in the grades.

International GCSE (IGCSE) is the version offered at international British-curriculum schools and at most British boarding schools accepting non-UK students. The content is broadly similar; IGCSE is structured for students who don't have continuous UK schooling. Most top UK universities treat IGCSE and GCSE identically for admission purposes. The practical difference: IGCSE is taken in Years 10-11 (age 14-16), GCSE is the same. International boarding schools default to IGCSE; UK day schools sometimes do GCSE.

Yes, on first-class terms. Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia all have published A-Level admission policies. The conversion is straightforward: 3 A*s = competitive top-30 US application; 4 A*s + strong SAT/ACT = strong Ivy candidate. US universities also give substantial advanced-standing credit for A-Levels at A grade or above (typically 8-12 credit hours per A-Level subject). The advantage: students saving 1-2 semesters of US tuition can offset some of the boarding cost.

Subject-specific. Mathematics + Further Mathematics + Physics for Engineering / Natural Sciences. Maths + Chemistry + Biology for Medicine. History + English Literature + a third for Humanities. Maths + Economics + a third for Economics or PPE. The specific combination matters more than the headline 3 As. Oxbridge published their preferred A-Level combinations per course; check the course pages early — some lock in the combination at age 14 (when GCSE choices are made).

Possible but disruptive. Switching from IB Year 1 (DP1) to A-Levels Year 12 in the same school is rarely allowed; the first half of DP1 doesn't map onto A-Level scheme of work. Switching schools and curricula simultaneously at the start of Year 12 / DP1 is the cleanest break point — many students do this when relocating internationally. Mid-A-Level switches usually mean a student loses a year. We help families think through the switch decision; usually the answer is to commit to one or the other at the start of sixth form.

Most boarding schools require IELTS 6.5+ or Cambridge Advanced English for international entry. Below that, schools offer one-year English-intensive foundation programs (especially TASIS, ACS Cobham, Bromsgrove, Mill Hill International). For Turkish students from English-medium schools (Robert Lisesi, Üsküdar American Academy, TEV Inanc Türkeş, etc.), entry to Year 9 or Year 10 directly is usually feasible. From Turkish-medium schools, plan a foundation year unless your child is already at IELTS 6.5.

Pre-University (Pre-U) is a Cambridge-administered alternative to A-Levels offered at a small number of UK schools — Eton, Charterhouse, Westminster's sixth form, North London Collegiate. It's designed for top-end students; the curriculum runs longer, deeper, and more research-heavy than A-Levels. Universities accept it on first-class terms (some Oxbridge tutors prefer it). It's not a separate decision in most cases — schools either offer A-Levels or A-Levels + Pre-U, and the school admissions team will guide which sits better with your child's profile.
