About St Mary's College, Crosby

St Mary's College Crosby was founded in 1919 by the Christian Brothers — the Irish Roman Catholic teaching order — as a boys' Catholic school in Crosby, the coastal town on the Liverpool Bay coast immediately north of central Liverpool. The school became co-educational in stages — Sixth Form 2008, then fully co-educational 2017 — and today educates around 824 pupils ages 4-18. The Headmaster is Michael Kennedy. The school is a member of the HMC and the CISC and is inspected by the ISI.

The school's most distinguished modern alumnus is the Liverpool poet Roger McGough CBE — one of the three poets (with Brian Patten and Adrian Henri) of the seminal 1967 Mersey Sound anthology that brought the Liverpool poetry movement into the British mainstream, member of the comic-musical group The Scaffold (whose 1968 Lily the Pink reached UK No. 1) and presenter of BBC Radio 4's Poetry Please. McGough was a pupil at St Mary's in the 1950s.

The school operates a substantial bursary programme intended to provide educational access for Merseyside families regardless of family means, maintaining the Christian Brothers founding principle of educational access regardless of family wealth.
