About Downside School
Downside School was founded in 1606 at Douai in northern France by English Benedictine monks during the Recusant period when Catholic education was illegal in England. The school operated in Douai for over 200 years before fleeing to England in 1814 during the disruptions of the French Revolutionary Wars. The school established its present home at Downside Abbey, Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset. The Downside Abbey church (Grade I listed Gothic Revival, designed by Edward Hansom and consecrated 1882-1925) is one of the most architecturally significant Catholic churches in England. The school is co-educational since 2005 and educates around 350 pupils ages 11-18 with a substantial boarding population. The Head is Andrew Hobbs. The school is a member of the HMC, the Boarding Schools Association and the CISC.
