Dover College was founded in 1871 in the precincts of medieval Dover Priory at Dover, Kent. The school operates today on a coastal campus and is co-educational. The school's most internationally significant alumnus is Sir Frederick Ashton — the choreographer who directed the Royal Ballet from 1963 to 1970 and whose works (Symphonic Variations, La Fille Mal Gardée, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Ondine) defined the English ballet style.
